A Gouy–Chapman–Stern model of the double layer at a (metal)/(ionic liquid) interface

چکیده
Kornyshev [A.A. Kornyshev, J. Phys. Chem. B 111 (2007) 5545] has recently modelled the (metal)/(ionic liquid) junction and predicted therefrom the capacitance of that interface as a function of the applied potential. One of the purposes of the present article is to demonstrate that, at least in one particular case, the same prediction can be made more simply by applying the principles that Gouy, Chapman and Stern adopted in their classic treatments of the double layer at a (metal)/(electrolyte solution) interface. The analysis predicts the distributions of potential, charge and ionic concentration, leading to support of Kornyshev’s finding of a capacitance that displays a maximum value at the point of zero charge, whereas a minimum is expected for a double layer at an electrode in electrolyte solution. The two systems are compared and contrasted in respect to capacitance and the distribution of ions. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Classical Models of the Interface between an Electrode and an Electrolyte
An electrical double layer (EDL) plays a major role in understanding the interface between a charged surface (e.g. an implant) and ionic liquids (e.g. body fluids). The three classical models of the EDL (Helmholtz, Gouy – Chapman and Stern Model) are numerically solved for a flat surface electrode in the 3D Electrostatics mode of Comsol Multiphysics 3.5a Software. The values of the electric pot...
متن کاملThe effects of the electrical double layer on giant ionic currents through single-walled carbon nanotubes.
We developed a computational model for investigating the cause for the high ionic current through a single-walled carbon nanotube nanofluidic device by considering the electrical double layer at a solid-liquid interface. With this model, we were able to examine the influence of the Gouy-Chapman-Stern electrical double layer and the solution concentration on the ionic conductance in the device. ...

We present a combined theoretical and experimental analysis of the solid-liquid interface of fused-silica nanofabricated channels with and without a hydrophilic 3-cyanopropyldimethylchlorosilane (cyanosilane) coating. We develop a model that relaxes the assumption that the surface parameters C(1), C(2), and pK(+) are constant and independent of surface composition. Our theoretical model consist...

A comprehensive picture of the interface between aqueous solutions and the (110) surface of rutile (alpha-TiO2) is being developed by combining molecular-scale and macroscopic approaches, including experimental measurements, quantum calculations, molecular simulations, and Gouy-Chapman-Stern models. In situ X-ray reflectivity and X-ray standing-wave measurements are used to define the atomic ar...
متن کاملElectrical double layer interactions between dissimilar oxide surfaces with charge regulation and Stern-Grahame layers.
Models of surfaces with intrinsic ionisable amphoteric surface sites governed by the dissociation of acid-base potential determining ion species together with the capacity for the adsorption of anion and cations of the supporting electrolyte are required to describe both the results of electrokinetic and titration measurements of inorganic oxides. The Gouy-Chapman-Stern-Grahame (CGSG) model is ...
